home & interiors: precious stones

For autumn/winter 11/12, a renewed sense of spiritualism and affinity with the natural world sees artificial materials discarded in favour of the dishevelled bounties of our natural habitat. An admiration of the allure of raw materials and the intricate patterns, rich colours and inspiring textures of our natural environment translates into a trend that sees beauty in minerals and rocks.

art & design: aaron coleman

Printmaker, Aaron Coleman introduces his conceptual work of geometric patterns through the use of modern technology.

His work presents rustic, primitive tones and textures that conflict with the chosen printing techniques of silkscreen and lithography to form highly complex and symmetrical designs which are further digitally manipulated. Coleman’s focus is on creating industrial scenes paired with ‘ominous figures’. The use of raw patterns and textures display a hand crafted element to the symmetrical silhouettes, contrasting man-made technology with traditional crafts.

Coleman’s work demonstrates Mpdclick’s forecast for autumn/winter 11/12 which looks to a “renewed sense of spiritualism that evokes an affinity with the natural world and the rediscovery of the instincts buried deep within us all.” Ancient worship, Pagan symbolism and a primitive colour palette is key, elements exemplified within Coleman’s work.

trends: organic armour

Words by Mpdclick’s Retail Editor…

For autumn/winter 11/12 Mpdclick looked to scientific innovation to underpin Innovate, a trend flooded with angular refraction, microscopic organic forms and calculated shapes.

As the season draws closer the current Mondo Curio exhibition in Toronto by artist Paul Cook has pushed forward the solely scientific trend to one that embraces a protective, primitive aesthetic. When looking to science and innovation for answers it is necessary to refer back to our primitive roots, resulting in an intelligent, natural look shielded by contemporary, organic armour.

trends: spirit warrior

Words by Trends & Runway Editor
Mother immortal or fearless warrior, fashion’s celebration of the archetypal woman has adopted many guises. In January 2010 Mpdclick’s autumn/winter 11/12 fashion forecast considered the dawn of a new consumer age, where reality would be faced and the consequences of fast fashion realised, resulting in a deep affinity with the natural world.

As the trend starts to take shape, the predicted rejection of frivolity and mass consumption begins to occur and aesthetically the trend adopts a celestial slant as fashion forward females embody the divine spirit of Gaia, the Goddess of Earth and nature.

press preview: aminaka wilmont

Yesterday Mpdclick had the pleasure of viewing the Scandinavian duo’s autumn/winter 11/12 collection ‘Totum’.

‘Totem’ takes influence from totemic tribes, primitivism and subtraction. The influence behind this darker collection was taken from totem poles, spirits and animals, with a focus on primitive religions and deities taking on new forms, creating a new tribe.

The collection maintains soft silhouettes and draping in silk georgette, with asymmetric cuts and the use of straps across the body, accentuating and flattering. Yet the Aminaka Wilmont avant-garde, trademark tailoring remains strong with the use of washed leather jackets and shorts, mixed with thick, Italian Shearling and Toscana.

The digital prints from this collection are inspired by animal hides, skins and furs. The prints are bold and strong and there is a hint in the direction towards more structured blocks of shape and colour. The knitwear, in graduating shades of grey has been cut to flow widely around a silhouette, with arm and leg warmers continuing the raw and unbreakable feel throughout the collection.

Totem’ is tougher, more raw, durable and meaningful. The impenetrable wedge boots, both knee and ankle high, heavily represent a strong animal’s hoof, reaffirming that a hard edge can still be elegant. With pheasant feathers, glaring eyes and long hair, there is a gluttonous edge to this collection.

Maki Aminaka, Creative Director at AMINAKA WILMONT says, “For us this collection has been about showing the British fashion industry who the Aminaka Wilmont woman is. She is determined and confident with her own individuality and uniqueness. This is our 7th season on schedule, we know the direction we are moving in and we want this to come across in this collection.”

Mpdclick says: The primitive nature of this highly crafted collection sits perfectly with Mpdclick’s Primal trend forecast, reinforcing our predictions for autumn/winter 11/12. Primal notes “a renewed sense of spiritualism evoking an affinity with the natural world and the rediscovery of the instincts buried deep within us all.” Mpdclick subscribers, click here for further Primal trend information.

jewellery & design: colleen choi

Words by Trend Journal Editor…

Californian born, NYC based jewellery designer Colleen Choi has created a series of one-of-kind accessories made from an assortment of materials and advanced metal smith skills. These designs caught our eye with her use of raw, unconventional shapes set in finely crafted settings, a key reference for a/w11/12.

Colleen’s designs “reflect her native Southern California ease and embody the beautiful array of experiences and perspectives that have coloured her world”. The combination of free, fluid lines, water marks and resin rocks show an appreciation of nature and the elements.

Each accessory is different, providing inspiration for fashion and interior through the use of raw yet mastercrafted shapes and otherworldly contrasting textures. The earthy colour palette further adds to the jewellery’s adherence to one of Mpdclick’s trends for autumn/winter 11/12 that embraces an affinity with the natural world and the rediscovery of the instincts buried deep within us all.

jewellery & design: garden of eden

Words by Mpdclick’s Trend Journal Editor…

Antwerp based brand Atelier 11, consisting of designer duo Ludovik Colpaert and Flor Janssenshave present a spring/summer 2011 collection that unites the fantastical and the scientific, in an aesthetic that explores the beginning of life, Eden.

As a brand who design their jewellery as a form of communication, Eden speaks of both the good and evil encountered in the mythical tale through the representation of snakes, apples as well as the aesthetical beauty, featuring birds of paradise, exotic flowers and mythical animals.

The scientific aspect is interpreted through almost coral like forms, intricate link formations, DNA like strands and 3-d molecular structures.

The designers explain their concept further “To escape the harsh reality of today’s world people like to dream, to travel in their imagination to a beautiful paradise. In our collection we escaped from reality and went back to the beginning of everything”, Ludovik Colpaert explains. “We did not only explore the Garden of Eden, but we also studied the scientific part of the story, the beginning of life on a molecular level.”

The Eden collection is of particular interest to us here at Mpdclick as the concept echoes aspects touched upon in a few of Mpdclick’s forecasted trends; Fable (SS11) that looks to fantasy of nature and two of our autumn/winter 2011/12 trends, one of which places nature under the microscope and another that celebrates an affinity with the natural world.

art & design: angeline rivas

Words by Mpdclick’s Art Trend Researcher…

Images that conjure up connotations of ancient religious symbols, flowing water, the bark of gnarled twisted trees combined with the intricacies of cubism, captivating scenes of surrealism and iris like tonal blending is not what you would normally expect to come out of an everyday ballpoint pen. But when in the hand of Angeline Rivas it is merely a few of the achievements the humble ballpoint pen can list.

Her work inspired by perpetual musings of nature offers images that often have a spiritual and intense impact with an ancient Aztec tribal feel to each of them. This is further enhanced by the use of tie dye inspired blending of midnight blacks to gothic greens and twighlight blues. Rivas main intricate and powerful images have also spawned other pieces of artwork, made from the blotting of the ballpoint pen on paper to remove excess ink built up by the ‘parent’ work.

The result is images that are just as captivating as their ‘parents’ however where Rivas main images astound you with their precise geometrical beauty these images offer an entirely different aesthetic. A swirling, scattered, delicate and abstract offering that still references nature displays  subconscious organic images, bringing to mind swarms of birds taking flight or rapidly multiplying microorganisms.

Rivas has also dipped her toe in the fashion world creating Cavern collection (a collaboration with artist Adam Tullie a few years ago), specialising in hand dyed and printed T-shirts based on her own unique art work. The venture enjoyed considerable success with publications in the Los Angeles Times, Purple, Wonderland and Style.com to name but a few.

The ease at which Rivas beautiful images can be evolved into stunning and critically acclaimed fashion pieces just highlights the importance and integral links to one of Mpdclick’s autumn/winter 11/12 trends as we predict the rise and appreciation of an aesthetic that blends religious, natural and geometric elements together to continue to grow and evolve.
