Name: Sophie Porteous
Location: UK

Specialisms: Fashion textiles, surface pattern design.
Graduate from: Swansea Metropolitan University, Surface Pattern Design BA (Hons)
Profile: “I believe that creativity is something you are born with, but only develops through constant investigation. This explains my open-minded approach to design, which, along with my wide range of design skills, allows me to work to a variety of different briefs. My main source of inspiration comes from culture and natural forms. I am fascinated by shape and layering and my work is often very detailed, involving different design processes. I am an avid follower of the latest trends and continuously develop my work to ensure I am up to date.”

Sophie’s work stood out by showing great knowledge and understanding of future trends and techniques which also reflect key elements of MPDClick’s spring/summer 13 trends. The laser cutting project (pictured main) alludes to our Modern Artisan trend which celebrates contemporary craftsmanship, while the Leonardo Da Vinci project (pictured below) resulted in beautiful prints inspired by the man himself. Sitting in a sophisticated Mediterranean colour palette, this project echoes our New Renaissance trend – recognizing a re-birth in design and culture across the region.

art & design: nick van woert fuses classical statues into contemporary sculptures

Words by Mpdclick’s Graphic Trend Researcher.

Season: Spring/Summer 13
Good for: Print and graphic inspiration

Brooklyn based artist Nick Van Woert’s sculptures build on existing classics whilst creating new ones in the process.

Van Woert’s mixed-media approach evolves from doodles, drawings, and models which then move towards sculpture. His pieces offer a sometimes unsettling, yet entertaining and beautiful twist on classical art. He attended Parsons for his MFA and now makes artworks that take on and challenge the history of art, design, and sculpture. Last year, Van Woert’s ‘She-Wolf’ exhibition held at the Grimm Gallery in Amsterdam, Holland was of particular interest, exemplifying this concept.

The artist’s process of developing new works from classic, historic pieces reflects key influences of Mpdclick’s forecast New Renaissance trend for spring/summer 13.

Art & Design: New Renaissance Street Art

art & design: new renaissance street art

Words by Mpdclick’s Print Trend Researcher.

Season: Spring/Summer 13
Good for: Print and graphic inspiration.

From a young age, artist Yola discovered that Renaissance perspective and light compositions began his appreciation of painting.  Using well known recognizable icons and symbols combined with people from a local community centre, he recreates scenes from Renaissance paintings in a contemporary context.

Using a Renaissance artistic concept he invites his contemporaries to do the modeling for him. In reference to this he states, “Very often these decisions were highly controversial: a painter would paint a dignitary and put him in a crowd of ‘saints’ consisting of local down-and-outs or other dubious characters. Hence my desire to include locals from the Warsaw’s district of Praga in my images, as in the image of Christ, and the idea to involve people from a local day centre.” – Yola

Understanding that in painting, nothing is new, Yola interprets themes and subjects from his own perspective with each image having its own meaning.  The paintings are selected in such a way that anyone with a small knowledge of art history can recognise the original it refers to and to understand the dialogue with the original.

fashion & collaboration: gucci x fiat 500

Set to debut during New York Fashion Week, on Fashion’s Night Out at 8th September, the new limited edition Fiat 500 by Gucci represents the perfect combination of craftsmanship and style, bringing together two of Italy’s most respected brands. In the year that sees the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy and Gucci’s 90th anniversary, these special editions of the iconic Fiat 500 and 500 Cabrio have been customized by Gucci Creative Director Frida Giannini in partnership with Fiat’s Centro Stile.

In the 50s the Fiat 500 created a style revolution when it first hit the road. It quickly became the must-have car of its time. Travelling in style has also been at the heart of Gucci ever since Guccio Gucci founded his company as a producer of leather trunks, suitcases and handbags in 1921. So, when Lapo Elkann suggested the idea of this collaboration it struck me as a perfect opportunity to create a new modern travel statement in Gucci’s 90th anniversary year,” said Frida Giannini.

Inspired by neo-classic black and white film, the new black and white Fiat 500 and 500c by Gucci models are finished in unique eye-catching glossy pearl-glass paint. These two distinct colors complement one another: black, with detailing in shiny chrome paired with interiors that contrast sharp black and white, for a contemporary and racy attitude. White, with satin chrome detailing and ivory and black interiors for a softer, sophisticated look.

The collaboration of these two highly iconic Italian brands places a spotlight on the heritage of craftsmanship within Italy, as well as the effortless chic travel style of the Mediterranean. Mpdclick considers these as indicators inspiring future trends for the spring/summer 13 season.

The 2012 Fiat 500 by Gucci models will be available exclusively at FIAT Studios nationwide December 2011. For more information, visit www.fiatusa.com/gucci.
