Fashion: A Stella Scholarship

Words by MPDClick’s Runway Editor.

This month, saw the exciting unveiling of Stella McCartney’s new sponsorship programme for the students of Central Saint Martins. Ex-graduate McCartney, also attended the graduation ceremony receiving an Honorary Fellowship, to mark her life-changing experience at the University.

The scholarship will fund home, EU and international MA fashion students at Central Saint Martins, on a basis of academic excellence and financial need. Included in the programme will be a full year paid internship at the company, an invaluable experience for any student.

McCartney, describes her time at CSM as “life changing” and went on to say “to get into a college like this, is so hard for so many talented young people. For that reason, I am setting up this scholarship and I encourage other fortunate fashion houses to do the same.”

Professor Jane Rapley OBE, Head of Central Saint Martins said “Stella has been a huge supporter of Central Saint Martins, but has really taken our breath away with this immensely generous funding. Her work underpins the UK’s standing as the world’s creative capital which is crucial to our economy and reputation.”

The first scholarship will be awarded in October 2012, with the selected students committing to McCartneys animal rights beliefs, not using fur, leather or any products that harm animals as part of their university work. No doubt, this prestigious programme will help many young creatives, hopefully encouraging other companies to follow.
