In 2011 Aamu Song and Johan Olin of Helsinki-based studio, Company, set out on a journey to explore the manufacturing secrets the world’s largest country, Russia. Their travels led them to collaborate with six traditional manufacturers. “After visiting each factory, and getting to know their manufacturing secrets, we designed new products based on their tradition.” From this, a collection of new traditional items known as ’Secrets of Russia’ was born.
With designs spanning from bags, boots and babushkas to stools, tea-sets and trays, all the products are produced using the knowledge from the skills they learnt during their time in Russia. The project will be exhibited in KIASMA (Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki) in the ’Camouflage’ exhibition on 15th June – 7th October 2012.
These wonderful products are in keeping with MPDClick’s A/W 13/14 forecasted trend Reflective, which sees generations mix nostalgia from the Soviet Era with new identities of Eastern Europe and Russia to conceive a modern and updated folklore aesthetic.
