Design and Print Inspiration: Alexander Girard

Words by MPDClick’s Graphics Trend Researcher.

Alexander Girard (1907 – 1993) is one of the greatest pattern makers, environmental and exhibition designers of the 20th century. Alexander Girard’s designs are currently being re-introduced into the contemporary marketplace by MáXimo, transforming iconic designs into items for the home so that they can be used, interacted with, and enjoyed on a daily basis.

Hired by Herman Miller in 1952, drawing inspiration from folk art he led the company’s textile division where he brought colour and life to the modern furniture creations of George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames. Today, Girard’s fabric designs are timeless expressions of charm, wit, and originality.

Products currently on offer at MáXimo using original Girard prints include printed cushions, rugs, dolls, toys, bags, stationary and even bikes!

Girard’s iconic style drevied from folk art provides a wealth of inspiration for future design in line with MPDClick’s Reflective trend forecast for autumn/winter 13/14.
