Retail Preview A/W 12: Liberty London

Words by Isabelle O’Carroll.

Liberty London broke with tradition last week and presented their autumn/winter 12 buy thematically, rather than by designer. This is a novel and refreshing way to re-digest pieces by designers like Christopher Kane, Michael van der Ham, Kenzo and Dries Van Noten and brings to the forefront for newer designers like Teatum Jones.

One of the biggest trends to come out of their carefully constructed collection for next season was animal, but this isn’t your average Bet Lynch print. Animal print has been reworked in neon, with sequins on knitwear at Sibling, and in fuzzy mohair.

Another offering is their selection of metallic pieces; Michael van der Ham’s luxe sweatshirt offers a sporty take on the look, with raw edges and stretchy cuffs. Devoré and velvets also get a look-in, with Christopher Kane’s richly coloured dresses; padded leather hems and belts giving an update on the fabric.

New labels like Haider Ackermann’s opulent fabrics and rich colours sit well against designers such as Kane. Both designers have produced a version of the obi belt in their collections, while Dries Van Noten uses chinoiserie fabric on Studio 54 style voluminous dresses.
