British designer Samuel Wilkinson and product design company Hulger have won the 2011 Brit Insurance Design of the Year for their innovative re-design of the low energy light bulb. The Brit Insurance Design Awards, dubbed “the Oscars of the design world,” showcase the most innovative and forward thinking products from around the world.
Projects with sustainable and global themes are strongly represented, while everyday non-stylish products that have been enhanced in some way are extremely popular (last year’s winner was a folding plug). Winning design ‘Plumen 001’ is what Jury Chair Stephen Bayler calls “a good example of the ordinary things done extraordinarily well, bringing a small measure of delight to an everyday product.”
The nominated and winning designs are featured under the seven major themes of Product, Transport, Graphics, Interactive, Furniture, Fashion and Architecture at the Design Museum in London until the 7th of August 2011. Mpdclick is set to cover the exhibition in the near future and create a comprehensive overview of the showcase as it did back in 2010.
