cinema: the birds (2013)

Words by Mpdclick’s Cinema Trend Researcher…

‘The Birds’ is certainly a true classic in horror/thriller, directed by the master of the genre, Alfred Hitchcock. In 1963 when it was first released Hitchcock said: “It could be the most terrifying motion picture I have ever made” and it really was at that time.

Starring Tippi Hedren and Rod Taylor, the film told the story of ‘A wealthy San Francisco socialite [who] pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people there in increasing numbers and with increasing viciousness.’ [IMDB]

No, it doesn’t compare to the gore fests and hyper realistic special effects moviegoers have become accustomed to these days, but it still remains a much-loved classic for most. For this reason the news of remake was incredibly exciting when it broke back in 2006.  Rumour had it that Hollywood  beauties Naomi Watts and George Clooney were to play leading roles of the modern-day thriller, with ‘Transformers’ director Michael Bay at the helm.  The attached director was later to be changed to Martin Campbell in 2007 and, more recently, to Dennis Iliadis.  It would also seem that George Clooney is also no longer attached to the remake, but so far Naomi Watts is still on board to play Tippi Hedren’s character Melanie Daniels.

Sadly it appears that there is still major confusion surrounding the finer details of the remake; Producer Brad Fuller says, “‘The Birds’ we’re still trying to figure out.” However, the movie is still getting the ‘go-ahead’ and has been given a release year of 2013…for the moment anyway.  So, will we ever see a remake of Hitchcock’s classic winged apocalypse?  Or has the sun indefinitely set on Bodega Bay?
