Disney’s Villains Designer Collection

Words by MPDClick’s Future Trends Researcher.

Highlighting an emerging interest in childhood villains, Disney’s Villains Designer Collection celebrates its most charismatic and villainous characters with a limited edition doll set and various additional merchandise including make-up, fashion, stationery and homeware.

The characters Cruella DeVil, the Evil Queen, Ursula, Mother Gothel, Maleficent and the Queen of Hearts have been revamped to capture the hearts of little girls who once favoured Disney’s princesses. Principle designer Steven Thompson explains that the Villians collection was inspired by more modern fashion looks, taking references from modern art, fashion, architecture, theatrical stage costumes, pop culture and of course, the villains original Disney films. He continues, “I consider my interpretation of the Disney Villains dolls in this collection as fashion sketches come to life.” Read more about the creation of the dolls here and here. The doll set officially launches in Disney stores on September 10th and online on September 11th, but as of yesterday, customers are able to pre-order the complete collection here.

So why the sudden interest in Disney’s ‘bad girls’? Villains, with their wicked ways have always been fascinating, and from n visual point of view, they have a more appealing contemporary design aesthetic. With recent and upcoming film revealing that the dark side (and most notably dystopian themes) are becoming increasingly popular with both children and adults alike, we predict that this will be a massive influence on future trends. In fact, 2014 will see the film adaptation of Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent character hit our cinema screens, with Angelina Jolie playing the lead role. Keep your eyes peeled for more news on Disney’s attractive yet dastardly villains.
