look of the week

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

This week the Kardashian’s annual family Christmas card photo was released showing just how far the family has come in recent years. In a highly polished monochrome colourway, Mom Kris Jenner stands out as the head of the family in a sequinned turquoise frock.

Shunning their usual attire of figure hugging outfits, the women of the family instead opted for a selection of androgynous, tuxedo inspired outfits. A welcome change of tone, the sequinned jackets retains the sense of glamour and glitz the family is known for.

We particularly love Kendall and Kylie’s outfits which wouldn’t look out of place in a Vogue Editorial, especially Kendall’s black veined shirt.

s/s 12 press preview: twenty8twelve

Twenty8Twelve’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection is inspired by the 1957 film ‘All the boys are called Patrick’ and captures the attitude, free spirit and energy of the films female characters.

The first delivery takes us to Africa in the 1970s, with tribal prints, dusty stones, greens, rust, sunrise ambers and hot yellow referencing the high sun. Hammered silk, crepe de chine and gloss silk are used to showcase zebra, duped hand print and cave painting inspired prints. Tailoring has a laid back feel with a utility edge – the influence of Yves Saint Laurent who creatively played with the Safari suit during the era is apparent with high waisted trousers and short fitted jackets.

Brigitte Bardot’s film ‘And God Created Woman’ serves as the starting point for the collections second delivery that embraces all that 1950s fashion did for women. This season brings us back to Riviera chic and the classic 1950s feminine hourglass silhouette. Rich and classic colours of cobalt navy and off white add a nautical edge, offset with retro floral and abstract prints. Feminine details such as waterfall ripple fabrics, accentuated box pleats and twisted fabrics add to the languid mood of the time.

The final delivery of the season – in stores for high summer, emulates a nonchalant summer heat. A true beach vibe runs throughout the collection. The vibrancy of the care-free spirit is embodied in soft corals complimented by navy, swimming pool blue and pure hot white. Sun bleached yellows are seen against charcoals and melange grey – sensual and sun soaked. Sky blue marl sweat shirting, true blue denims and soft tencel chambray are seen throughout this delivery.

The third delivery incorporates Twenty8Twelve’s ‘Artist of the Season’, Talya Baldwin. Talya has created two illustrations that appear on two styles within the collection. The illustrations are naïve in their technique – Talya loves to use old biros and felt tip pens to build upon her illustrations, inspired by vintage typography, illuminated manuscripts and children’s drawings creating a playful effect. Talya’s work is a perfect complement to the collection.

music: viadrina

Words by MPDClick’s Music Trend Researcher.
Polish house duo Viadrina are currently making waves within the House music scene, cited as having “great talent and great potential” by their record label Klasse Recordings.
Considered to be the hottest new act coming out of Poland by music platform Soundcloud.com, Mateusz Kazula & Konrad Ślazyk aka Viadrina came together in 2010. Both growing up in the same neighbourhood in Poland and being heavily influenced by the electronic music scene, Mateusz & Konrad came together to find a new path and form the production duo ‘Viadrina’, meaning “by the river Orda”, which is the river that connects the duo’s home town.
The entrancing, deep and euphoric style of Viadrina sets the pace for the wealth of talent we expect to come from the region as a creative focus soon turns to Eastern Europe.

s/s 12 press preview: claudia ligari

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

For another season Italian designer Claudia Ligari has created a simple yet elegant collection for spring/ summer 2012. With this season’s signature colours being white and cream, the collection mixed basic silhouettes with detailed patterns to create an exciting collection.

Ligari’s inspiration comes from the minimalist movement and from her past and present experiences within the fashion industry. Ligari’s signature style was shown with tailored pieces and architectural lines. Key pieces include a wooden panelled top where attention to detail shows Ligari’s interest for structured patterns, highlighting her skills for different textures and materials within garments.

Simple cream gowns renew interest with statement arched panels, transforming minimal silhouettes into wearable architecture. A panelled sheer shirt also caught our attention with sheer front panel – a sure hit with stylists for the season.

The artisan construction of this collection reflects the growing interest in authentic craftsmanship. This is highlighted within MPDClick’s Modern Artisan trend for spring/summer 13 where we predict this trend to gain commercial momentum.

s/s 12 press preview: sperry

Sperry Topsider, the original boat shoe brand, introduces the Spring/Summer Collection for 2012, featuring new looks, styles, colours and materials; encompassing a selection of styles from authentic to modern.

Formen, the iconic Boat Oxford available in canvas, leather or suede, puts a stylish twist on the brand’s classic A/Odesign.  The new Sperry Cup design targets a younger audience looking for athleticcomfort combined with a fashionable style and attention to detail.

The 1935 Classic A/O 2-Eye has been transformed for spring/summer 2012.  Now available in brushed leather, suede and drenched in bold colours that epitomise summer. The iconic staple has also been recreated in denim and canvas. The Bahama with its unique vulcanised sole is offered again in fresh colours reflecting a growing penchant for contrasting colour soles within the men’s footwear market – a key style for us at MPDClick.

Sperry’s women’s spring/summer 2012 collection has been inspired by European and American coastal towns to develop designs that reflect the ocean, air, sun and sand.

Sperry has added a new twist on its original A/O2-Eye collection this season, with new materials such as fish skin, washed canvas, leather and suede. Stripes, metallics and ton sur ton are but a few examples of how the classic A/O have been given a fresh, contemporary feel for 2012.

An exciting addition to the ladies spring/summer 12 collection is the Bluefish, one of the best selling and iconic Sperry styles in the US today. Making an introduction overseas for the first time, this popular and easily wearable style adds a preppy feel to the collection. The Bluefish is available in classic colourways of tan/tweed and black/checked combinations as well as summery sky blue featuring nautical stripes, drawing a real emphasis from Sperry’s strong boating heritage. The Bahama with its characteristic vulcanised sole is available in avariety of seasonal colourways.

Styles standing out for us at MPDCLick include the candy striped A/O 2-Eye and ultramodern Bahama designs – styles sure to sell well.

lifestyle & sports: city snow

Words by MPDClick’s Sports Trend Researcher.

Due to be completed in 2014 in Suffolk, England, Snoasis is set to be Europe’s largest indoor ski slope. The resort will include its own ski village inspired accommodation and are expecting to have 650,000 visitors a year.

It’s not just the UK who are investing in indoor ski resorts with planned developments in Egypt, Stockholm and even Thailand due to be completed in the next 4 years. The increased popularity in indoor ski centres may be due to the ever changing climate and economic downturn resulting in people opting for a city snow break instead of a more traditional winter holiday.

As well as holiday makers being drawn to city snow holidays, indoor ski slopes are also starting to gain recognition from top athletes. In a recent interview with The National Newspaper in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Olympic snowboarder Danny Kass was quoted saying that indoor slopes such as ski Dubai are the perfect training ground for young hopefuls who want to start an international career.
