s/s 12 press preview: we are handsome

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

Last season MPDClick were captivated by We Are Handsome’s signature of statement prints and the spring/summer 12 collection effortlessly kept the momentum going, urging our craving for sunshine to reappear.

The range is titled ‘The Romantic’ described as “seeing life through a different set of eyes. This season, be captivated and fall in love again as we continue our journey, showing you the world of romance through our eyes.”  - We Are Handsome

Eight print stories feature across the range, our favourites being ‘The Secret Garden’, ‘The Fighter’ and ‘The Adventure’, all pictured below. The collection has been expanded this season with key pieces being the Panel One Piece, Corset Bikini, Shoulder Top and Shorts, styles we predict to sell well.

s/s 12 press preview: draw in light

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

Introduced to new label Draw in Light at last season’s press events, we were very much excited to see what the label had in store for spring/summer 12, hoping for more ethereal prints and dreamy silhouettes – we weren’t disappointed.

The theme for the collection was ‘Mapping’, described as “a visual representation of areas charting relationships between elements of internal or external space…Free-hand silk-screen techniques & photographic techniques have been used to translate these ideas including block colour, open space with delicate detail, bleaching dye, hand painting onto the screen, dissolving threads, punching studs and teasing weft & warp using cyanotype, a liquid light process.

These inspired techniques retain the labels ethos that ‘everything is unique’. Silhouettes are elegant yet ooze a raw appeal with unfinished and frayed hems. Expanding their fabric use, silk is contrasted with denim, neoprene, leather, suede and brass bolts, creating a highly tactile feel to the collection. Favourite silhouettes of ours include the shift dresses with contrasting crop top overlays as well as the high neck maxi dresses. Currently held at select boutiques across the globe including Liberty London, we predict this label to go far.

s/s 12 press preview: body editions

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

The debut Body Editions collection exists out of necessity for one stylist who couldn’t find what she was looking for when working on editorials and shoots.

MPDClick met founder Raquel Franco, previously working as a stylist for publications including i-D and Vogue, who explained the range caters to her desire for second skin garments that hold unlimited styling potential. Filling a niche in the market, Body Essentials do just that, providing timeless as well as trend-led pieces that are guaranteed to sell.

Body Edition bodysuits are designed to provide a flattering fit in panelled jersey as well as seamless knits, with both basic and statement pieces catering to a range of styles. A black sheer panelled spotted design (pictured below) was highlighted as a favourite with supermodel Kate Moss and may even be making an appearance on the cover of i-D magazine with the lady herself!

Already being stocked at Opening Ceremony, big things are expected for this new label.

fashion and market: haute couture thriving in china

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

A recent article on global news service Reuters.com highlighted the growing trend of traditional influences on contemporary Haute couture collections focusing on label NE TIGER who have also experienced increased demand for haute couture. The expanding luxury Chinese market is one MPDClick have been tracking for some time.

Haute couture mixing traditional Chinese touches and styles from more than 1,000 years ago with Western designs opened China Fashion Week, as the world’s fastest-growing market for luxury products catches the eyes of more designers.” – Reuters.com

Zhang Zhifeng, who founded NE TIGER expressed to the publication “The haute couture industry in China is developing vigorously without any signs of slowing down. This is above my expectation…I thought my haute couture would live only with a small group of people, but now it is expanding very quickly. Consumers have become increasingly fond of Chinese traditional culture.

Zhifeng also expressed the continued interest of traditional influences of China’s history such as stories of the Tang Dynasty, explaining the influence this period still has over current Chinese society. This combined with the fast growing luxury market, places a spotlight on the country of which MPDClick predict to take shape in the retail landscape for autumn/winter 12/13′s Remix trend together with the region’s growing influence over African trade. look of the week

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

Here at MPDClick, we recently discovered the style blog ‘Jess loves Fred’, today’s Look of the Week highlights Jess’s covetable ensemble that she posted yesterday providing real-time contemporary styling inspiration.

This season’s 70’s trend is represented through burnt orange palazzo pants in a high waisted fit contrasted with a turquoise snake print box shirt; a great colour combination that will make window displays pop. A statement gold necklace pulls the look together while a big cat printed clutch demonstrates the potential of clashing prints.

design focus of the week

For this week’s design focus of the week, we are inspired by emerging textile designer Katie Rosina, who MPDClick recently caught up with to find out a little more about her work and her inspirations for future designs.

Katie Rosina is a super-talented textile designer specialising in the home interior market. Inspired by a passion of colour and everything floral, each design is hand-painted from her favourite spots around The Great British Isles, working with summer meadows and the stunning location of Mottisfont Abbey in Hampshire to create beautiful floral prints with a splash of colour.

Katie creates beautiful and versatile designs that echo her enthusiasm for painting, combined with an exceptional attention to detail, making each design individual. Through skilled design and printing techniques, Katie manages to capture every brushstroke and colour with extreme precision, enhancing the feeling of exclusivity, and shows how anyone can create their own ‘interior garden.’

Having gained fantastic work experience as a freelance designer for Cake Studios in London, Katie has outdone many of her peers and sold her prints to agents across the world, including Japan, Paris and New York. These designs are set to appear in forthcoming spring/summer 12 and autumn/winter 11/12 collections, showing Katie’s early success as a textile designer. Not content with that, Katie was also shortlisted for a Liberty in London collaboration competition in early 2011 and her products are currently being considered for New Design Britain awards.

So what does the future for this budding designer? Katie explains to MPDClick that she continues to create new designs throughout the year, enabling companies to incorporate her prints into their collections. Initially focusing on interior products including wallpapers, cushions and curtains, Katie has broadened her print collections to include a successful scarf collection and fashion prints exclusively produced for the fashion industry.

Katie, who is currently on a three month placement with MPDClick, impressed us not just with her extensive portfolio, but diligence, enthusiasm and bubbly personality. She is a consummate professional who has a unique talent in translating beautiful hand-painted prints into high-end products that are commercially viable. She undoubtedly has a great career ahead of her!

s/s 12 press previews: first thoughts

Words by MPDClick’s Trend Journal Editor.

After a full day of the first press previews for spring/summer 12 yesterday, here we present our initial trend thoughts so far.

For womenswear, the 1970’s aesthetic has taken a softer turn with washed out pale tie-dyes and ombre effects while elsewhere a minimal, draped aesthetic took hold, seen in both soft mineral tones and bold block colours. Throughout many collections a prominent focus of contemporary shirt designs was evident as well as either bursts of neon, see through trim detail or all-over block colour – a key trend to invest in for s/s 12.

A focus on technical and experimental fabrics proved to be the focus of many menswear collections yesterday seen at Stone Island and J.Lindeberg with practical, functional details such as detachable hoods being key design features. Relaxed tailoring was another general consensus with day to night styling potential being a key selling feature.

Stay tuned to the Trend Journal as we post key looks from brands and designers we’ve been catching up with.
