fashion graduate profile: eppie conrad

Name: Eppie Conrad
Location: UK
Specialisms: Fashion/Textiles/Accessories.
Graduate from: Northumbria University, Fashion BA (Hons).
Quote:I am a dedicated and passionate textile designer and always enjoy learning new techniques in print and fabrication. My work has a strong use of colour, as I like bold, graphic styles and enjoy designing sportswear garments. For print ideas I am currently inspired by old fashioned toys and cartoons.”

Graduate Eppie Conrad shows an established illustration style that we love here at Mpdclick, fusing hi-tech and systematic precision with a naive sensibility. The finished collection perfectly reflects Eppie’s initial concept inspired by 1950′s toy robots and Japanese streetwear. Form and function have also both been considered here: “a sportswear/cycling collection thats plays with a “look at me” edge in the day and a “notice me” safety function at night”, making this collection not only aesthetically bold and beautiful but technically savvy.

look of the week

Words by Mpdclick’s Trend Journal Editor.

This week Mpdclick travelled to Milan to capture the most inspirational individual styles emerging on the streets. Here we present two simple, transitional summer looks using range basics that are transformed with considered styling, ready to translate into the retail landscape.

A high waisted fuschia pink skirt is toned down with a knotted and rolled up dark grey tee; a simple detail that instantly reworks a basic. Minimal ankle boots cement the effortless appeal of this outfit, finished with a pair of classic black wayfarers.

Next we see menswear summer essentials, a relaxed v-neck tee and rusted city shorts; a chic summer look that is easy to recreate in-store. Executed with a pair of ‘geek chic’ glasses and unconventional sock and sandal combination, his rugged stubble and tattoos reassert his masculinity, a potential mannequin concept.

exhibition: masters of style

Mpdclick recently attended the ‘Masters of Style – Celebrating the stories behind Italian Fashion’ exhibition at Somerset House, London.  Showcasing the biggest names in Italian fashion design, the exhibition portrays iconic photographs and illustrations, most of which come from advertising campaigns, produced over the course of the fashion houses’ histories.

2011 marks 150 years since Italy became a unified nation which has subsequently created some of the world’s most famous artists, industrialists and designers.  As part of its contribution to these celebrations, Peroni Nastro Azzurro (the sponsors) has worked with Colin McDowell (the curator) and six of Italy’s iconic design houses to create an exhibition that celebrates a central aspect of Italian culture- fashion”. – Peroni Nastro Azzurro

Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Salvatore Ferragamo, Gucci, Missoni and Prada have personally chosen their favourite images which feature the work of highly respected photographers including Mario Testino, Steven Meisel and Glen Luchford, models such as Gisele and Kate Moss and famous celebrities including Madonna and Isabella Rosselini.

Inside the apt classical surroundings of Somerset House on the ground floor, flat screen TV’s rolling runway images sit alongside a synopsis on each of the design houses, and introduces each of the small rooms dedicated to them.  The images are recognisable, some are iconic; seductive compositions are seen in Giorgio Armani’s photographs whilst Dolce & Gabbana’s double meanings, and Salvatore Ferragamo’s simplistic style where product is the focus, are all spotted and appreciated as part of that designer’s style, allure and look.

The exhibition is a must-see for followers of fashion and readers of such magazines who have flicked past these beautiful images in the past to appreciate the timelessness of the photographs and the fashion, which are a true testament to the quality and craftsmanship of the brands.

The ethos behind the exhibition has strong links with our trends for autumn/winter  12/13 New Renaissance and Modern Artisan which focus closely on craftsmanship, heritage and quality tailoring.

Over the past year, I’ve been developing my Bodywear range with my team and I’m extremely positive about what we have designed and produced,” said David Beckham. “The final piece in the jigsaw was a retail partner who has the vision and capability to distribute these products globally. In H&M we have found the perfect partner to collaborate with going forward, I’m excited and looking forward to showcasing the range to H&M customers from February.”

David Beckham is a true icon both of sport and style. It is incredibly exciting for H&M to be entering into a long-term partnership with him for his DAVID BECKHAM Bodywear line. business: luxury apparel brands achieve astounding growth

Words by Mpdclick’s Business Editor.

As forecast by Mpdclick in our autumn/winter 12/13 trend Myriad, the Luxury market continues astonishing growth as people buy into brand values, heritage and longevity.

While half the world struggles with debt, high-end brands are reporting sky-high returns, far outperforming all other market sectors.  This is proven by French luxury goods brand LVMH, Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, who earlier today announced that in the first half of this year sales increased 13 percent exceeding analyst forecasts.

Luxury brands appear recession-proof and have seen their sales soar, as demand for high-end products remains largely unaffected by lethargic global economic growth. Consumers in emerging nations have also helped buoy luxury brands.

space race: russia’s new spaceport

Words by Mpdclick’s Future Trends Researcher

Russia is currently building a new spaceport as part of the second ‘race for space’ with China and America.

The new spaceport will not only enhance the growth of its commercial space industry but will also see the launch of unmanned flights from the port by 2015. With 800 million dollars of investments behind it, this is a significant step in ensuring the stability of the Russian space industry.

Russia lost the race for space in the 1960s, so many see this development as a means to gain a technological-edge over the US. We also note a rebirth in popularity of Soviet space propaganda posters, with plans to renovate a Soviet-era space training centre at Star City near Moscow and the recent exhibition ‘Star City’ at Nottingham Contemporary. The exhibition showcased the work of leading artists who grew up in the former Eastern Bloc, as well as real objects and propaganda from the period, including USSR Space Race posters, a life-size replica of a Sputnik, space food and a collection of Polish space toys.

Mpdclick will be monitoring  Russia, the second ‘race of space’ and nostalgia for the Soviet era as predominant influences in future trends.

fashion: roberto cavalli resort 2012

Words by Mpdclick’s Runway & Trends Assistant.

Famed fashion designer Roberto Cavalli shared his acid-toned print-focused resort 2012 collection with Mpdclick, inspired by a plethora of prints developed over the past 40 years.

The first was an 80′s multi coloured floral bouquet print that we digitally manipulated, flattening the colours creating a monochromatic effect. This informed the remaining floral prints; one came from a 70′s print that had a baroque flourish in the arrangement. Each of these prints were developed in 5 key “acid” colours, lemon, lime, rose, tomato and peacock.

The next group of prints came from a tie-dye technique that was replicated on a wide variety of fabrics and skins, from chiffon, crepe de chine, cotton, to printed pailletes, knit jacquard and  leather; with a new signature leopard “acid animalier” print. For our last group we took a late 70′s toile du jouy print and hand painted the background in ivory, red and black.

The importance of reissuing and developing old Cavalli prints was of great importance as we wanted to explore a new silhouette for this pre-collection, that had a younger more casual approach. We wanted to create a wardrobe of clothes that did not fall into the day/eveningwear divide.

We also began an experimentation with embroidery using new techno fabrics, the main workmanship was done in hand covering Swarovski crystals with a very lightweight reflective fabric. We used this research into new, innovative fabrics in the jewellery and accessories of the collection. For the jewellery, we again used this reflective fabric to cover the crystals and pearls, creating a new techno iridescence. Fine bone porcelain was used to make floral chokers and bracelets with hand painted gold leaf detailing, to further accentuate the floral motif in the prints. The classic Cavalli serpent this time was made from tiny engraved gold flowers arranged to form the shape of the snake.

The combination of stylised floral and tie-dye printing with intricately hand-embroidered sequins and bead work creates an awe-inspiring resort collection, further enhanced by a picturesque floral montage backdrop

fashion & innovation: issey miyakes 132 5

Issey Miyake’s Autumn/Winter 11/12 collection ‘132 5’ is based on an innovative concept inspired by the intricate skill of origami combined with the ideas of “regeneration and re-creation.”

The complex designs in this collection are created using computer software developed by Japanese computer scientist, Professor Jun Mitani. This software allowed Miyake to create flat geometric shapes using one sheet of cloth that then opened up into three-dimensional wearable garments, many of which can be worn in multiple ways. As the three-dimensional garments are not cut or sewn, they are heat pressed whilst in two-dimensional form in order retain the permanent pleats which allows it to hold its shape. The Issey Miyake brand have described the collection as; “a union between mathematics and clothing making.” The name of this collection comes from the process in which the garments are produced. ‘1’ refers to the one piece of cloth used to create the product, ‘3’ indicates the three dimensional form of the clothing, ‘2’ is for the two dimensions of which the garment can be flattened to and ‘5’ represents the fifth dimension in which Miyake explains as the instant the clothing is worn and transformed.

The combination of maths, scientists and geometric shapes within this ‘132 5’ collection provides a strong indicator of Mpdclick’s forecasted autumn/winter 11/12 trend ‘Innovate’ which sees “linear and geometric shapes are key features requiring fabrics such as high quality 100% polyester fabric to create intricate and precise pleats and folds. Micro-pleating can be applied to sections of garments to alter the silhouette or to accessories for a linear look. Moiré-effect fabrics, either of silk or synthetic, reflect the mathematical theme creating mesmerizing interference patterns.”

exhibition: yohji yamamoto at work

Words by Mpdclick’s Home & Interiors Editor.

Following on from a major retrospective of Yohji Yamamoto’s work at the V&A museum, London, The Fashion Space Gallery at The London College of Fashion presents ‘Yohji Yamamoto at Work’, a unique opportunity to experience the creative process behind a navy pleated dress from his autumn/winter 10-11 collection.

The presentation, construction and inspiration for the garment are accessible through a series of toiles, patterns and photographic studies taken at Yamamoto’s working studio in Japan as well as backstage at Paris Fashion Week. In reverse sequence, the journey is mapped from finished garment to the original raw fabric synonymous with Yamamoto’s experimental design.

Professor Frances Corner of the London College of Fashion, commented, “It is a great privilege to be showcasing the work of Yohji Yamamoto, one of the most influential and enigmatic fashion designers of recent times, here in the Fashion Space Gallery. The exhibition will provide a fascinating insight into creative processes which would normally be hidden from view, offering the public a unique insight into his original approach to design.”

Mpdclick highlights this interest in how traditional displays of craftsmanship are becoming more influential and appreciated by the consumer in our forecasted trend for spring/summer 13, Modern Artisan.  Don’t miss your opportunity to see the show which runs until 6th August 2011 and is sure to appeal to anyone with a curiosity as to how a garment progresses from concept to catwalk.
