trade fair: b&b – the sport & street desert land

Today the team at BREAD & BUTTER has shared plans about their new ‘DESERT LAND’ space at the much anticipated July edition of the trade fair.

Visions become reality in the middle of the concrete desert of the Tempelhof airfield: DESERT LAND is a completely new designed outdoor area presented by SPORT & STREET at the BREAD & BUTTER SUPERSHOW.

Inspired by hippie parties and music festivals, watching movies like Mad Max and hanging around at trashy trailer parks, the futuristic, artificial plot of land in the most unusual setting is sure to be one of the coolest spots for hanging around and doing business.

Between dried-out palm trees, cacti, sand, old rusty cars and a petrol station, SPORT & STREET presents the “Favela” bar-restaurant, a stage for amazing live performances, a pool oasis where you can cool down, a basketball court, a skate park and an “Artist Trailer Park” where performers will create memories and, in some cases, also individual pieces for visitors.

S&S SURVIVAL KIT

If you want to survive in DESERT LAND then you’re going to need the S&S Survival Kit: a package containing the basics to ensure survival in a desert emergency.

These well selected 10 products are a special collaboration pieces by SPORT & STREET and their highly respected partners, to communicate & celebrate the 10-year anniversary of BREAD & BUTTER.

Don’t miss the official launch of the S&S Survival kit on Wednesday, 6 July 2011, at 5pm, supported by the live performance of J*DaVeY.

Another striking attraction is “The Sport & Street Library by Zillion for Japan“.

A Zillion Ideas, a multimedia agency based in Tokyo and spearheaded by David Guarino, is hosting three rooms in the SPORT & STREET Boarding House. The well-known Magazine Library from Tokyo is transported to one of the beautiful rooms, showcasing art books, magazines and special editions. Saji’s Kitchen, a food installation and photo exhibition is held in the second room, where visitors even have the opportunity to eat the installation. In the third room the Zillion brand, which is re-using vintage kimonos and obis from the 1950s, is presenting kimono-clad skateboards as interior items - selected pieces are also for sale. All proceeds will be donated to the Tohoku region that was shattered by the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March this year. One for all, all for Tohoku!

And to send the temperatures skyrocketing SPORT & STREET is presenting artists who are currently enjoying well-deserved hype and perfectly convey the Desert Land feeling: MELO-X will be the first to hit the DESERT LAND stage, followed by performances by J*DaVeY, BLACK MILK and, last but not least, THEOPHILUS LONDON.

Let DESERT LAND take you on a once-in-a-lifetime adventurous trip.

look of the week

Words by Mpdclick’s Trend Journal Editor

This week the team at Mpdclick have been recovering and reminiscing about the biggest festival in the world, Glastonbury, and we couldn’t resist bringing back with us a gorgeous look of the week from those muddy fields.

Brit super songstress Jessie J made her Glastonbury debut this year, hobbling on with a broken leg and one towering heeled wellie boot and then took a seat and performed on a royal red and gold throne. Jessie rocked her body-con style in a black & white body stocking, with skeletal inspired print. Combined with her signature raven black bob, her dark demeanour was lifted with a statement gold door-knocker necklace and matching nails as well as festival ready jewelled eyes and violet lips.

graduate fashion: highlights – central saint martins ma textile futures 2011, part 2

A desire to embrace and support the natural environment was evident in the work of some of the recent graduates from the MA Textiles Futures course at Central Saint Martins. The ethos of the programme is to challenge perceptions of what textiles can be.

Literally using the earth as a material, Hyun Jin Jeong’s quietly beautiful project (pictured main top) was simple yet compelling. Responding to sustainability issues in the dyeing and finishing of textiles, she collected 45 different soils from varied locations in the UK and South Korea. Using these materials, extensive experimentation resulted in her rich palette of earth pigments, which she used for dyeing and printing. She explains, “There are many natural materials that were once used but are now forgotten. I think rediscovering these materials and using them wisely is essential for a sustainable future.

Amy Pliszka was inspired by the spectre that may loom with the demise of the honey bee. “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would only have four years of life left.” She created a collection of expandable living spaces for urban bees, using textiles created from only bio-degradable materials. She feels strongly that, “the future of textiles will be about re-configuring our relationship with the planet’s resources.

A great, whimsical approach came from Wei Chen, whose ‘Ephemeral Intervention’ (pictured main bottom) utilised craft skills to enliven commonplace structures in the urban environment. Degradable materials mean that the structures eventually disintegrate, dispersing seeds. Other seeds are embedded in the pieces to germinate and grow in situ.

event: shubbak

We recently caught up with the Mayor of London’s Office to talk about London’s upcoming celebration of contemporary culture from across the Arab world. This exciting event unites the Arab nations and Britain, while further underpinning our predictions of a celebrated multicultural presence within London as the city is propelled into the limelight for the Olympics in 2012.

London Mayor Boris Johnson revealed Shubbak: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture, will encompass over seventy events in more than thirty key cultural venues throughout the city for three weeks from 4 – 24 July 2011, organised by the Mayor of London and sponsored by HSBC.

Shubbak (the arabic word for ‘window’) will feature a wide-ranging programme of visual arts, film, music, theatre, dance, literature, architecture, lectures and discussions, many of them free, hosted by leading London cultural organisations.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said: ‘London is a global city in which Arab culture has played a significant part over the centuries –the word ‘Trafalgar’ even originates from the Arabic language. This festival is a unique chance for Londoners to glimpse the breadth and excellence of contemporary Arab culture and its influence on London’s cultural scene today. At a time of remarkable political and social change, Shubbak marks an exciting moment between artists in the capital and across the Arab world. I have no doubt that it will stimulate, delight and surprise audiences.

Zarir J Cama, Group General Manager, Group Management Office, HSBC Holdings plc, commented: ‘Shubbak: A Window on Contemporary Arab Culture will provide real insight into the Middle East and we are pleased to announce this sponsorship as the first event of our 2011 and 2012 global Cultural Exchange programme, Arabian Journeys. Celebrating the rich and diverse culture of the region, the programme will include research with the Economist Intelligence Unit, Arabia Offscreen - an international education project involving an expedition to Saudi Arabia – and exclusive cultural experiences for clients and stakeholders, with further announcements to be made shortly. Following our previous spotlights on the emerging markets of China, India and Brazil, our Cultural Exchange programme reflects the value we place on appreciating and understanding different points of view when building successful working relationships.

Work by contemporary Arab artists, writers, film-makers, musicians, choreographers and architects based in London and from countries around the world will be presented including Algeria, Bahrain, Canada, Egypt, India, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Tunisia, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, USA.

Munira Mirza, Advisor for Arts and Culture to the Mayor of London, said today: ‘We are absolutely delighted at the response we’ve received from cultural organisations all over London and across the Arab world to our invitation to take part. There is a real sense of excitement and collaboration amongst artists and I believe the festival will demonstrate the power of culture to bring people together.’

Aaron Cezar, Director of the Delfina Foundation, speaking at the Press Conference, said: ‘Through Delfina’s renowned artist-in-residency programme in London, we know first-hand that this city is a beacon to both young and established artists from the Arab world.  We are excited to be part of Shubbak, alongside so many venues and organisations in London, at a time when the world is re-evaluating its preconceptions about the Arab world and when London is yet again proving it is the world’s cultural capital.

Mpdclick says: Shabbak not only celebrates the relationship between the Arab nations and Britain but further drives the spotlight on this often misunderstood nation; playing a key part among a number of other events and art exhibitions that are redefining perceptions.

Words by Joyce Thornton. Joyce Thornton is a youth culture and trend expert, providing a monthly look at emerging design talent.

Celebrating a decade of forward-looking, experimental work created by it’s graduates, this year’s Central Saint Martin’s MA Textiles Futures graduates presented further radical concepts at a recent exhibition, challenging perceptions of what textiles can be.

Amy Congdon’s ‘Biological Atelier’ project (pictured main top) imagines a world of the future where “ethical ivory accessories or fantastical furs” can all be grown to order. She sees “a new role for embroidery and textile design in our biological future”. Natsai Chieza’s project also dealt with the application of living materials. Her vision for the future is that “biotechnology and the life sciences will have a profound impact on design and manufacture.” She sees designers of the future working with these radical concepts and having “a pivotal role in making sense of the ramifications of such appropriation.”

Laura Martinez’s ‘Digicrafted’ project (pictured main bottom) explored ‘Rapid Manufacturing’ technologies, which she believes are set to transform the way products are designed and manufactured. Laura created some beautiful, experimental, decorative textiles that fuse RM technology with traditional fabric manipulation techniques.

fashion: timberland – design your own

Words by Mpdclick’s Trend Journal Editor

Already offering the chance to design your own classic Timberland boot, this season’s must-have style, the boat shoe has now been offered up by the footwear giant as the next style to make your own for both men and women.

Handsewn style just got even more individual. Introducing two moccasin-toe styles for men and women: our classic 2-eye boat shoe with its siped rubber outsole and lightweight leather upper, and our traditional 3-eye handsewn shoe, equipped with a tough rubber lug outsole and a padded collar.

If you thought boat shoes only came in brown, think again! We’ve got smooth, oiled, burnished and nubuck leathers in dozens of colours.

For a timeless look, select a single colour all over, or use the panel construction to create anything from a toning masterpiece to an outspoken shoe that’s full of character. Plus you can add monograms to personalise your shoe from heel to toe.

To get started and find out what else you can customise, click on your favourite style, then choose how you’d like to build your shoe: from scratch, starting with our classic version in burgundy oiled leather, or with a little inspiration from our designers.” – timberlandonline.co.uk

Timberland is embracing the opportunity to cash in on the current trend, or in fact austerity measure for ‘investment buying’. With the brands mid-price points and reputation for durable style and quality construction, the added appeal of customisation is a sure hit for the brand. The boat shoe shape is a clever choice; steadily growing in mainstream populairty over the last few seasons and already seen on numerous s/s 12 runway shows including Giorgio Armani and D&G, this is a shape that will stay and profit.

trade fair: pitti w june 2011, florence

Words by Francesca Marcaccio

Pitti W featured a special area dedicated to Brazil’s emerging talents in women’s fashions. The selection of young designers and brands, curated by fashion consultant Helena Montanarini, has shown the world the most creative contemporary ‘Made in Brazil’ looks, making a European debut for several of the participants. A brand and designer who caught my attention was Isabela Capeto.

Isabela’s career started 15 years ago when she graduated from Accademia di Moda in Florence, Italy. Before creating her own label she spent some time in the creative environments of other leading designers. She uses a unique method to create her collections;  inspired by books and museums, never by predetermined trends. Each piece is like a work of art: handmade, always embroidered, dyed or plisse, with appliqués  of vintage lace, sequins, tulle or fabric trims. Isabela’s main objective, as she always says, is to make women feel beautiful wearing her romantic clothes.

Pitti W was the platform Francesca Versace selected for the preview of her Sedici45 collection of women’s bags and accessories made of innovative materials. The name, (Italian for 1645), comes from the first time the word ‘fashion’ was used in the way it is still meant today. Francesca Versace is young, charming, devoted to nature and is a passionate traveller. Democratisation of luxury, valorization of basics, innovative materials and applied technologies in these high performance products are a result of a integrated ‘quality system’. Strictly ‘Made in Italy’, the Sedici45 bags are created for the young, modern woman who wants their daily gestures to be characterized by beautiful yet very functional products reflecting their desires. Articulated into four product lines, these bags enhance the combination of raw materials, processes and the most innovative and responsible products. The ‘travel line’ bags, created for short journeys, are manufactured to last. Materials include braided suede/leather with metal wire, anodised effect leather, glazed satin matched with an embossed bee-hive effect structure

A special event at Pitti W was staged by Rodarte, the acclaimed California brand created by Laura and Kate Mulleavy, that has been under the spotlight on New York’s catwalks and Hollywood. Rodarte presented a site-specific event at Via dei Servi 30r featuring an exclusive preview of a ‘Special Collection’ inspired by Florence. The event presented elaborate pieces showcasing Rodarte’s signature techniques, sculptural detail and craftsmanship. The Mulleavy sisters commented “we are truly so excited to be able to design a special collection one that explores memory and time within a place so rooted in our creative development“.

fashion: galliano resort 2012

Words by Mpdclick’s Managing Editor…

Following Galliano’s tumultuous year, blighted by his anti-Semitic outburst, subsequent rehab stint and departure from both Dior and his eponymous label, a Resort 2012 collection has been launched.

In a strategic move from his publicity team, the line, by newly named creative director Bill Gaytten, uses black models for each of its thirties themed ensembles, inspired by American blues singer Bessie Smith.
