colour: pantone reveals colour of the year for 2012

Pantone®, the global authority on colour and provider of professional color standards for the design industries, today announced PANTONE® 17-1463 Tangerine Tango, a vivacious, enticing hue, as the colour of the year for 2012.

The 2011 colour of the year, PANTONE® 18-2120 Honeysuckle, encouraged us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor. Tangerine Tango, a spirited reddish orange, continues to provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward.

Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute®. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.”

Over the past several years, orange has grown in popularity and acceptance among designers and consumers alike. A provocative attention-getter, Tangerine Tango is especially appealing in men’s and women’s fashion. Fashion designers featured in the PANTONE Fashion Color Report Spring 2012, including Tommy Hilfiger, Nanette Lepore, Cynthia Steffe by Shaun Kearney, Elie Tahari and Adrienne Vittadini, are incorporating this attractive orange into their spring collections. A fun, lively take on a traditional autumnal hue, Tangerine Tango will surely carry through into fall fashion as well.

A winner in cosmetics because of its versatility, Tangerine Tango is a bit exotic, but in a very friendly, non-threatening way. Add a sultry flair to lips, cheeks and nails with Tangerine Tango. An unexpected eye shadow colour, Tangerine Tango is a complementary opposite that flatters blue or green eyes. When paired with brown eyes, it brings out an amber cast.

SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE
Sharing a strong passion for how colour can transform a face, mood or even an attitude, Pantone has partnered with Sephora, the leading beauty specialty retailer, to create an extraordinary collection that will change how consumers wear, feel and think about color. Launching in spring 2012, SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE™ delivers insightful color forecasting, timely trends and powerful seasonal product collections. To celebrate the launch, SEPHORA + PANTONE UNIVERSE proudly presents the first Colour of the Year beauty collection.

These products allow for on-trend, uninhibited expression, while being exceptionally wearable,” commented Gilbert Soliz, lead artist for Sephora PRO. “Whether she is looking to create a bold look featuring Tangerine Tango, or if demure trend expression is more her style, the collection allows for customized wearability.

The limited edition collection features a variety of products including eye shadow, lipstick, lip gloss, nail polish and accessories, and will be available in Sephora Americas beginning March 2012.

Tangerine Tango for Interiors and More
Energise interior spaces with Tangerine Tango patterned home accessories. Pillows, bedspreads and tabletop accessories in this high-impact hue add spice to any room. Or incorporate Tangerine Tango appliances and personal electronics for an unexpected pop of colour. Looking for an inexpensive way to perk up your home? Paint a wall in Tangerine Tango for a dynamic burst of energy in the kitchen, entryway or hallway.

Tangerine Tango products are also available from Chronicle Books (publisher of “Pantone: The Twentieth Century in Color” and creator of Pantone paperback journals), Dessy (a leading manufacturer of bridesmaid, social-occasion and flower-girl dresses), MyColor inspired by Pantone (a spirited new collection of grab-and-go paints), PANTONE PAINTS (Pantone’s line of superior-quality, eco-friendly paint), Rickshaw of San Francisco (lightweight and stylish messenger bag created especially for Pantone) and W2 (creator of the iconic PANTONE Chip mug).

home & interiors: trend focus a/w 11/12

Words by MPDClick’s Home & Interiors Editor.

Just in case you missed it, MPDClick has just published our comprehensive Trend Focus reports for detailing key furniture and lifestyle products for autumn/winter 11/12.

Within the lifestyle product sector, talented artists and designers are experimenting with mixed media collage, spontaneous brushstrokes and precise mark making, revitalising the traditional skill of illustration, thus widening its appeal to the commercial sector.

For furniture, the autumn/winter season sees a growing desire for warm, cocooning environments where self-indulgent fabrics feature heavily. Hyper-tactile rugs, oversized knitted cushions and raw ceramics are merchandised with the season’s must-have furniture trends to create an inviting sensual environment.

home & interior: decorating with scarves

Words by Home & Interiors Editor.

Using patterned silk scarves as statement items of decoration is coming through as a key trend-led option to update both interiors and fashion lines.

Seen within the D&G finale runway show at Milan Fashion Week, the brands heritage scarf prints were transformed into knotted dresses and statement shirts for men, creating contemporary designs from traditional items. This trend has also been reflected within home and interiors.

A number of different techniques have been seen within various blogs such as blog.fossil.com as well as an article featured in Elle Décor magazine, from framing the pieces like a work of art to covering lampshades, pillows and even used as throws and table runners, the possibilities are endless. This trend acts are a resourceful (using recycled scarves), cheap and effective way to uplift, evolve or even transform in-store spaces for the autumn/winter and spring/summer 12 season.

trends: supersize homewares

Words by MPDClick’s Home & Interiors Editor.

The trend for exaggerated proportions and volume play in art and fashion inspires new furniture concepts this winter, and is set to gain momentum well into 2012.

Elaborating on the consumer’s desire for comfort and protection during uncertain times, trend-led designers and retailers are investing in a design-led look that favours oversized enveloping forms, exaggerated tactility and blown-up patterns. This design aesthetic is easily translatable across the full spectrum of homeware products, with must-have items ranging from bulbous vases and oversized cable knit throws to cocooning leather armchairs and large-scale printed wallpaper.

Already championed by Interior magazine Elle Decor and brands such as Martha Stewart, Crate & Barrel, Bourouliec Brothers, Amy Butler and Atmos, this trend will have enormous commercial success through low, mid and premium ranges. The unique energy of the trend not only serves as an easy way to revitalise existing forms, but also but allows retailers and designers to engage with consumers by showing them that using outsize items can create a unique feel for the home, giving them the illusion of space as well as an inviting environment. Retailers that feature this trend through a complete room layout (through visual merchandising and product mixers), must make sure that the space they are creating is inviting and extremely tactile.

Interiors favour soft silhouettes, curved edges and domed structures, with self-indulgent and often cocooning textiles such as leather, faux fur, voluminous knits and padded upholstery. Alternatively, retailers can take one key product and use with the store’s existing homeware ranges, for example flooring and wallpaper panels that feature super-size decorative prints and blown-up details will work well against minimalist product shapes. In terms of price point, material choice and finish will have an enormous influence on final cost, but illusions through form, deceptive material finishes and functional details will add value to the product, no matter what sector you are designing for.

design focus of the week

Words by MPDclick’s Home and Interiors Editor…

As retailers begin to introduce new product collections into their stores, we highlight how Mpdclick has accurately predicted that calculation, intelligent solutions, scientific instruments and geometric forms are key influences for the autumn/winter 11/12 season.

Back in early 2010, Mpdclick released its autumn/winter 11/12 forecast under the summarative theme of ‘New equilibrium.’ The trend directive ‘Innovate’ looked at the race for new discoveries and solutions, with an accelerated sense of urgency as science is heralded as the saviour of a trouble stricken age. Here, a well though-out aesthetic drew inspiration from instruction diagrams, scientific symbols and the beauty of magnified nature.

Now, in September 2011, we note how this formulaic approach to design has been translated into the commercial market, with furniture and home textile products that feature geometric panelling, steel frameworks, and patterns and details inspired by instructional diagrams and scientific symbols.  Retailers, buyers and merchandisers should take inspiration from this clean, contemporary aesthetic and translate it across the fields of store design, product display, signage and product design.

Discover our pick of the best ‘Innovate’ themed products currently on the market:
